Dr. Wouter Frencken
Head of performance at FC Groningen & Board member of Football Science Groningen.
Wouter joined the department of Human Movement Sciences as a PhD student. The PhD-project was among the first to quantify tactical performance through position data. Having worked at the intersection of elite sports, research and education for several years, he was appointed as the first embedded football scientist in the Netherlands at FC Groningen, formalizing a long-standing relationship between university and football club. This has matured into a partnership where PhD- and MSc-students structurally work within the club, exemplar
for other clubs and federations. Currently, Wouter oversees the performance department with all specialist functions, including among others football science, analytics, nutrition, physical and mental training. He is (founding) board member of Football Science Groningen.
